Ukrainian universities require proof of valid health insurance before enrolling international students. This is a separate requirement from the border entry requirement under Article 7 — you need insurance to cross the border and to register at your university. Here is how to handle both efficiently.
What universities actually require
Most Ukrainian universities — including Kyiv Polytechnic Institute (KPI), Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Lviv Polytechnic National University, and V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University — require international students to submit:
- A valid health insurance policy at the time of enrolment
- Coverage for the full academic year (typically September to June — 9 to 10 months)
- A policy issued by a recognised insurer (Ukrainian-licensed or internationally authorised)
- The policy document in original or certified copy form
Some universities have standing arrangements with Ukrainian insurers and sell policies to international students on arrival at the university — typically priced at €50–€120 for an academic year. Check with your specific university's international student office before you travel, as this may be your simplest option after arrival.
Border crossing insurance vs. university enrolment insurance
These are two distinct requirements that may or may not be covered by the same policy:
- Border crossing (Article 7): requires an Article 7-compliant policy with specific formatting, issued by a recognised insurer, minimum 100,000 UAH coverage
- University enrolment: requires a policy valid for the full academic year, often with higher coverage requirements than the border minimum
Our Advanced plan (€30,000 coverage, up to 180 days) satisfies both requirements. For a full academic year, purchase two consecutive 180-day policies ensuring there is no gap between them, or contact us to discuss a longer-term arrangement.
Student visa applications
If your nationality requires a student visa for Ukraine, health insurance is part of the embassy application submitted before you travel. The standard student visa application typically requires:
- An acceptance letter or invitation from the Ukrainian university
- Health insurance covering your full proposed study period
- Proof of sufficient funds for your stay
- Standard passport photos and completed application form
Purchase your insurance policy before the embassy appointment and include the PDF with your application documents. Set the policy start date to your planned arrival date in Ukraine — coverage does not activate until that date, and you will not be charged for days before it.
What to do if your coverage expires mid-semester
Do not let this happen — both your university's international office and Ukrainian border control will flag expired insurance. Set a renewal reminder two weeks before your policy expiry date.
To renew: purchase a new policy on our website with the start date set to the day your current policy expires. This eliminates any gap in coverage.
If your policy has already expired while you are in Ukraine:
- Purchase a new policy immediately, starting today
- Notify your university's international student office and provide the new policy document
- Keep the updated PDF accessible on your phone — you will need it at border crossings when you next travel
