Before you travel to Ukraine, you deserve an honest answer about what war risk insurance does and does not cover. This is a factual breakdown — not a sales pitch.

What war risk insurance covers in Ukraine

The Advanced plan's war risk coverage pays for medical treatment caused by military conflict. Specifically:

  • Injuries from shelling, rocket attacks, or artillery fire
  • Blast and fragment injuries from explosions
  • Injuries from armed incidents or direct gunfire
  • Radiation exposure and nuclear contamination effects

In practical terms: if you are injured in or near a military incident and require emergency medical treatment, the Advanced plan covers your hospital bills up to €30,000. This applies regardless of whether the incident occurred near a frontline area or in a city like Kyiv, Lviv, or Odesa.

What war risk insurance does NOT cover

This is the section most people do not read carefully enough:

  • Property damage. If your belongings, vehicle, or accommodation are damaged or destroyed by military action, insurance does not pay for this.
  • Security evacuation. Getting you out of a conflict zone is not covered. War risk coverage is medical treatment only. Security evacuations are arranged through separate specialist services — government-organised evacuations, security consultants, or organisations like the ICRC.
  • Voluntary military activity. If you join a territorial defence unit or any military operation, injuries sustained in that activity are not covered under a civilian insurance policy.
  • Psychological trauma alone. Mental health treatment not connected to a physical injury from a covered incident is generally excluded.
  • Pre-existing conditions aggravated by conflict stress. A cardiac event during an air raid, for example, is typically treated as a pre-existing condition event rather than a war risk claim.

Is the Advanced plan worth it?

For any travel to Ukraine right now: yes. The price difference between Basic and Advanced is €0.60 per day — €2.02 extra for a 3-day trip, €88 extra for 180 days. For that additional cost, you get coverage for injuries from missile attacks and shelling incidents that have occurred in every major Ukrainian city.

The Basic plan satisfies the legal border entry requirement but leaves you without coverage for the most likely serious medical emergency in the current security environment in Ukraine.

Real numbers: medical costs in Ukraine without insurance

These are the actual costs foreign nationals face at Ukrainian medical facilities without a valid policy:

  • Emergency room consultation: €80–€150
  • Hospital admission, per day: €200–€800
  • Emergency surgery (moderate complexity): €3,000–€10,000
  • Emergency surgery (major): up to €15,000
  • ICU admission, per day: €400–€1,200
  • Medical transport within Ukraine: €1,500–€5,000

A serious injury requiring surgery and five days of hospitalisation would cost €5,000–€20,000 out of pocket. The Advanced plan covers up to €30,000 — starting from €5.32 for 3 days.

Who should definitely choose the Advanced plan

  • Anyone staying in or passing through Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa, Mykolaiv, or Dnipro
  • Journalists, aid workers, and volunteers working anywhere in Ukraine
  • Business travellers with stays of 7 days or more
  • Anyone with pre-existing conditions that could require emergency hospitalisation
  • Anyone who would face serious financial hardship from an uninsured €5,000+ medical bill

The Basic plan is a reasonable choice only for very short transit visits (3–5 days) to western Ukraine (Lviv, Uzhhorod area) with no plans to travel further east — and where minimum legal compliance at lowest cost is the only priority.
